JATAMANSI

Introduction:

Jatamansi plant is found throughout the year. Grows 1-2 feet in height and spreads around. Flowers are pinkish in colour. Small fruits have hairs on it. Root or rhizome is thick with hairs on it (Hence the name Jatamansi). The roots when dried and crushed gives oil with fragrance. Both oil and powder of roots is used in ayurvedic preparations.

Uses:

1. Strengthens the nerves and pacify mind hence given to cure hysteria, epilepsy, convulsions, anxiety, depression, and other mental problems. Improves memory.
2. Root powder is given for sound sleep and to cure insomnia.
3. Hair oil prepared from root powder is applied on scalp for growth and strength of hair and for sound sleep. Prevents premature greying of hair.
4. Purify the blood. Used in skin diseases. Improve skin lustre. Useful to cure itching and in vitiligo.
5. The oil has antispasmodic and carminative effect hence used to cure digestive disorders, gas, stomach pain, constipation and as appetiser.
6. Useful in gynaecological disorders like dysmenorrhea etc. and during menopause.
7. Useful as diuretic.

Excess dose of medicine to be avoided. To be taken as advised by experienced Vaidya.
