Introduction:

This is a small tree/ shrub, growing wild throughout India. Leaves are green and big similar to almond tree leaves. Flowers are white having five petals, Fruits are cylindrical, slim and long having light brown seeds similar to Jav, having silky hairs. Bark is light brown. Seeds, bark and roots are bitter in taste. There are two varieties of this shrub white and black. Bark, leaves, seeds, roots and flowers of both the varieties are used in Ayurveda. Used in ayurvedic preparation of Kutaj Ghanvati, Kutajarisht, kutaj kshirpak etc.

Uses:

1) Powder/ decoction of roots, seeds and bark is very useful in treatment of chronic diarrhea, and dysentery with blood.

2) Root powder with Vidang powder removes intestinal worms.

3) Powder/decoction is used to treat urinary disorders and to remove urinary stones.

4) Decoction is used to treat inflammation of piles and relieves bleeding piles.

5) Reduces pain, inflammation of joints, arthritis, gout etc.

6) Powder/ Decoction is used to treat gastro intestinal problems and to stimulate digestive fire.

7) External paste 0f powder is used to heal wounds, ulcers and other skin disorders like irritation of skin, eczema, scabies etc.

8) Powder is used to treat respiratory disorders and asthma.

9) Decoction is useful in treatment of jaundice.
