CARDAMOM

Introduction:

Elaichi plants are grown mainly in South India. There are two varieties of elaichi, one grows wild, which is bigger and black in colour, the other one is small with green fruits. Elaichi is widely used as spice in Indian kitchens due to its fragrance. Small seeds in the pods are used as spice and in medicines also. The main plant grows 5 to 15 feet in height, flowering plant grows up to 3 feet in height which bears fruits. Flowers are light violet and white, fruits are green capsule having three parts which contain seeds.

Uses:

  1. Useful in urinary problems, is diuretic.
  2. Useful in gastrointestinal problems like acidity, flatulence, indigestion etc., acts as an appetizer.
  3. Black cardamom is useful in respiratory problems like asthma, cough cold, removes phlegm.
  4. The ash of outer shell is given to control vomiting.
  5. Used as mouth freshener and useful in oral hygiene.
  6. Useful as anti-inflammatory in conditions like arthritis, gout etc.

Caution: Cardamom in excess doses is not recommended during pregnancy.
