SONAMUKHI

हिन्दी: सोनामुखी,  Binomial: Cassia angustifolia

Introduction:

Sena is a shrub growing up to around 3-5 feet in height. Leaves are dark green forms paripinnate pairs 3to9 on branches. Flowers are brilliant yellow. Pods are green which turns dark brown gradually, contains 5-7 seeds. There are many varieties grown all around the world, segregated as per the size of leaves, found in India (Mainly in South India), Saudi Arabia, Alexandria etc. Dried leaves, roots and pods have medicinal values and are used in Ayurveda as well as allopathic preparations.

Uses:

  1. Powder of leaves is used as Blood purifier, given as laxative in constipation. Also given in treatment of piles.
  2. Useful in relieving Cough, Decoction of leaves is given with honey.
  3. Treats Boils and other skin diseases like eczema, ringworm etc. Powder is given internally and paste of leaves applied externally on the affected part.
  4. Leaf powder is given to regulate pitta and lever disorders.
  5. Leaf powder is given to remove abdominal worms.
  6. Leaf powder is useful in Joint pain, arthritis, gout and similar conditions.
  7. For earache, leaf powder is given in warm water.
  8. Leaf powder given in worm water is useful in body weight management.

Cautions: Avoid increased doses of Senna, strictly to be taken under advice of experienced Vaidya. Not to be taken for long period.

Swadisht Virechan Churna:

Useful in constipation with main ingredient as Sonamukhi. Ingredients:

3-part Senna

1-part Fennel

1-part liquorice

1-part Sulphur

6-part Sugar
