Introduction:

It is a thorny shrub, not so high, may go up to 10-15 feet in height. Leaves are similar to Banian Tree leaves. Flowers are fragrant and white in colour. Bears fruits similar to beetle nut but with ribs, gets yellowish colour when ripe. Fruits are called Madanphala. Fruit is used in Ayurvedic Panchkarma Vaman or vomiting therapy. Fruits, Flowers roots and leaves are used in Ayurvedic treatment.

Uses:

1. Paste of madanphala is applied around naval portion for relief in abdominal pain.

2. Madanphala juice/ powder along with honey is given to induce vomiting. This removes cough and pitta.

3. For Eczema and other skin diseases Fruit/ root paste with neem powder is applied externally.

4. Decoction of leaves is used to wash wounds and ulcers.

5. Paste of flowers with mustard seed powder is applied on forehead to cure headache.

6. Applying juice of Madanphala on scalp will kill lice.

7. Paste is applied externally to cure inflammation and pain.

8. For relief in asthma and cough, Madanphala powder is given with Mulethi powder.
