Introduction:

It is a small tree or shrub with simple leaves. Bark is greyish brown. Flowers are with red-orange petals which turn pale blue after getting older. Fruits are greenish brown, cylindrical and spirally twisted hence also called screw tree. Pod looks like a singular capsule but consists of five fibers closely twisted to look like a screw. Root, stem, bark and fruits are used in Ayurveda.

Uses:  

1. Root/bark powder with buttermilk is given for treatment of dysentery and diarrhea.

2. Root/bark powder is used to treat abdominal pain, colic and intestinal disorders.

3. Paste of root with turmeric is applied on cuts and wounds.

4. Paste of leaves is applied to treat scabies.

5. Fried pods are used for treatment of Intestinal worms.

6. Decoction of root is useful in diabetes.
