Introduction:

Bael is ancient Ayurvedic tree having spiritual and medicinal value. In Indian literature it is described since Vedic period. It is one among the Dashmoola herbs. Bilva is called Shiva Druma and leavers are offered to Lord Shiva. 3 leaflets signify the trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwara. It also signify the 3 eyes of Shiva. The Skanda Purana says that the tree grew from the sweat of Goddess Parvati, so she reside in her different avatars in various parts of the tree.

The trees grows up to a height of 7-8 meters. It has sharp spines on its branches, large leaves and greenish-white, sweet smelling flowers. Ripe fruits of this tree are green-white and sub-spherical having a woody and tough outer coat. The roots are large, woody and often curved. The bark of the tree is light grey and corky.

Bael fruit, leaves, roots, bark and seeds are used as medicine in Ayurveda for the treatment of various ailments. Besides having medicinal properties, bael (Bel or Bilva) fruit is widely used for the preparation of puddings, juices and Murabba (Bel Murabba). Bael is extensively used in the treatment of various digestive problems such as diarrhea, dysentery, peptic ulcer etc. It also works as a mild laxative.

Uses of Bael:

1. Unripe fruits are used extensively in the treatment of dysentery, loss of appetite, ulcers, acidity and other digestive disorders.

2. Its extracts is applied on the exposed area, to cure inflammation.

3. Roots are used as antidote to snake venom and anti-inflammatory for healing.

4. Bel juice is useful in curing of constipation, heartburn, acidity and indigestion. Dried fruit pulp is used in preparation of summer drinks, which helps overcome sunstrokes.

5. Bael extract oil is used to cure respiratory problems.

6. Leaf juice is given with honey to cure fever, and to give relief in Asthama.

7. Used in treatment of tuberculosis and cholera.

8. The extract of unripe bel fruit is helpful in curing of piles and hemorrhoids.

9. Used in various gynecological disorders. Useful for vomiting during pregnancy.

10. Roots and leaves are used as diuretic in urinary diseases. 

11. Bael juice by grinding equal amount of bael leaf, pulp, roots and rind after adding two teaspoons of honey is used for wound healing.

12. Bael leaves have liver protecting effect hence used in liver diseases.

13. Fruits are used in preparing Murabba, squashes, Jam and refreshing juices. Used to prepare Salad and Chutney.

14. Poultice prepared from leaves gives relief in ophthalmic disorders and ulcers.
